That has led them to be able to record the shift of the magnetic poles to approx every 10,000 years to 50 million years. The last magnetic polar shift was 780,000 years ago. That could be false because if the shifts happen quickly, then there wont be time for much of iron present magma to have the time to align and add to the evidence.

Some hypothesize that the spin of the earth solid iron core in relation to the earths crust is the determining factor in magnetic pole direction. If there is a difference in speed of the core spin, verse the earth crust speed, you will create an electrical current just like a man made generator. This would create a polar DC current with a north and south pole at the axis of the spin. When the earths iron core is spinning faster than the surface, we have the north and south poles as we know them. If the core slows its spin, and once the crust is at a relative faster speed, then the magnetic poles flip. Positive and negative.

Plate tectonics are not correlated with these flip of poles. Therefore, when the magnetic poles do flip, the earth will stay the same.

It is unknown what effects will be experienced in an age of technology. Navigation issues, etc..
