When I was in 6th grade in the 90s, the school shut down the pop (fine, soda) machines for some disciplinary reason. I bought some 12 packs of Minute Maid Orange and coke (cola) and sold them out of my locker for $2 each. I got suspended for some crazy reason. My parents did not punish me at all.

When my youngest brother was in 4th or 5th grade he started stealing tobacco from my dad and me. He’d take it to school and sell it to the JR high kids so he could buy a snack for the bus ride home every day.

Mom kept getting pissed at dad and me saying we were chewing too much. We told her we hadn’t starting chewing more. Then the call came in from the superintendent.

It’s a fond memory of mine about him.

So far, so good with Kevin McCarthy. I fully expect for Kevin to fold but so far, so good. I wonder if now that McCarthy can get voted out a lot easier with the new rules if that somewhat allows him to be more populist because he really has nothing to lose

In what some might just call a giant "fuck you" to the Biden administration, Chevron has unveiled plans to buy back $75 billion in shares after reaping record quarterly profits in 2022, and increased the company's dividend.

Surprisingly, I received a message from my Congressman as a follow up to the phone calls I made into his office regarding the Speakership. I called everyday there was a vote and voiced my displeasure for him voting McCarthy. I'm inclined to respond so far so good. Here is his message:

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts regarding the Speaker of the House election. I appreciate hearing from you on this important matter.

Like you, I expect conservative leadership in our hard-won Republican majority, and you may be certain that I will continue to promote conservative priorities in the 118th Congress. I am no stranger to voting against speakers. I did not vote for Speaker John Boehner or Paul Ryan in Congress because they were not the right fit to lead the Republican Conference. On the other hand, I believe Kevin McCarthy is the right fit to lead congressional Republicans at this critical juncture.

In pursuit of our shared goals, I voted in support of Kevin McCarthy to become the next Speaker of the House. Kevin McCarthy has a plan to get our nation back on track. He is the Architect of the Commitment to America. This is a commitment to fight inflation, curb wasteful government spending, unleash American energy, secure our supply chain against China, secure the border, make sure parents' voices are heard in their children's education, preserve our constitutional freedoms, and hold our broken government accountable. Most importantly, the Commitment to America puts AMERICA first.

Washington has been broken for far too long, and this is a good reminder that democracy is alive. Debate is healthy for our Republic. We had many conversations and negotiations leading to this vote, and I believe Kevin McCarthy will do an excellent job leading our conference.

It is a privilege to serve you in the U.S. House of Representatives, and your input helps me to better represent you in Congress. I hope you will continue to keep me informed of issues important to you, your family, and our community. Should you have any further comments or questions on this or any other issue, please do not hesitate to contact me or my staff in my Washington, D.C. or district offices. For more information, or to stay current on important issues, please consider signing up for my electronic newsletter at http://weber.house.gov.

I work for you.
Sincerely,
Randy Weber

Here is what my congresswoman emailed to me.

Thank you for contacting me regarding the election of Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Knowing your thoughts and concerns helps me better represent the people of Missouri's 2nd District in Congress.
Over the past four years under Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the legislative process in the House of Representatives has been broken. Major pieces of legislation were drafted behind closed doors with little to no input from rank-and-file representatives, multi-thousand-page bills were introduced in the middle of the night only to be voted on hours later without being properly examined or scrutinized, and Members of Congress voted on these bills by proxy while they were on vacation in different parts of the world. Our Founders never intended for the House to work this way. They created the House of Representatives to be the People's House, where constituencies from every corner of the country could be heard and take part in the legislative process.

On January 7, 2023, the House of Representatives elected Representative Kevin McCarthy (CA-20) to be Speaker. Although the process was messier than previous Speaker elections, House Republicans were passionate about cementing the necessary changes to give every Member a voice. Throughout the process, I publicly advocated for openness and transparency, and I am proud of the new rules under which the House will now operate.

House Republicans ensured that bills will go through "regular order." This means that legislation must go through the committee process, where Members of both parties can debate and amend bills before they are brought to the floor, and Members will be given at least 72 hours to read legislation before it is brought to a vote. Regular order also means funding the government in a responsible manner, instead of jamming 4,000-plus pages of funding through Congress at the eleventh hour. The House will pass appropriations bills as they were originally intended, with 12 individual bills being voted on separately and allowing Members to propose amendments. Lastly, Members of Congress can no longer "phone it in" and vote by proxy. They will have to come to Washington, DC, as they were elected to do and represent their constituents in person.

All Americans are tired of business as usual, and in the 118th Congress, I am excited about advancing legislation with the input of all Members of Congress to tackle the kitchen table issues facing our constituents.

Again, thank you for contacting me on this important issue. Hearing the views of all Missourians gives me the opportunity to better understand how important public policy items could impact the people of our state and the future interests of our nation. In that regard, your input is most helpful.

Only one thing from this congress is going to matter. Will they fight on the debt ceiling? They can bring it all to a standstill, the one thing leftists fear most. It's the only true power the House has right now. If they cave on that, window dressing like hearings, booting Adam Schiff, blustery Ukrainian speeches etc were just that, window dressing.

McCarthy is a deep stater. 15 years of history shows that. I think we're going to find when the rubber hits the road, he's owned, and he'll either relent on the debt ceiling, or will allow enough Rs to revolt so that he can't win the vote. Hope I'm wrong, but facts and history say I'm not. If he weren't in the billionaires' hip pocket, they'd have never allowed him to get the party leadership spot in the first place.

I'd have never gotten away with stealing my dad's cigarettes. He always knew how many packs he had.

One night when I was a kid, he told me to go get a pack out of his truck. The wind was blowing really hard, and I was throwing the pack up into the wind and trying to catch it in the floodlights. Except one throw was errant, and the cigs wound up on the roof of the house. I went back in and told him there were none. He didn't believe me, went and hunted for himself and then drove several miles to get a pack. You better believe I was out early the next morning looking for those cigarettes. I didn't see them on the roof, so I assumed (hoped) they went down the gutter and eventually into oblivion. The beating I would have received if he'd found out....
