Eh, I think this was a good move. Expired registration/license should be a stoppable offense for exactly the reasons you stated, but the others? I'm with Philly on those. I've personally talked with LEOs who have stated they're trained at the police academy to use these "minor infractions" as a pretext to stop "suspicious" people/vehicles. During the day, they usually won't bother, but at night, they look for these things, or rolling stops, etc.
Not only is it ethically wrong, but even IF the LEOs apply the technique in an objective and unbiased manner (only the most naive among us believe they do), it still creates a PERCEPTION of bias, which damages community relations with the police, damages racial relations in the nation overall, and unnecessarily puts LEOs at risk.
We can back the blue without being sycophantic bootlickers who feel police are beyond reproach or criticism, including at an institutional level.
