Perhaps realizing that Ukraine's military forces are about to expire, Telegraph reported that Russia has amassed an estimated 40,000 troops around the key battlefront in Avdiivka as it prepares for a third wave assault on the shattered eastern town, the Ukrainian military has said.

“They are building up reserves. They’ve brought in about 40,000 men here along with ammunition of all calibres,” said Anton Kotsukon, spokesperson for the 110th separate mechanised brigade. “We see no sign of the Russians abandoning plans to encircle Avdiivka.”

Russian forces, he said, had surrounded the town on three sides and were “playing cat and mouse”, sending up “huge numbers” of drones to scout out Ukraine’s defences.

Ukrainian forces regard the town as a gateway for future advances to recapture territory in the east; alternatively the Russian army expects capture of the town to allow to penetrate deep into Ukraine territory.

As an American we are getting the opportunity to kill commies and weaken or longest running historical enemy while increasing America’s global reputation by giving struggling people the opportunity to defend themselves. The House Foreign Affairs Committee in the U.S. Congress has approved a bill to transfer frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine, Voice of America reported on Nov. 8.

The bill received 40 votes in favor and two votes against.

Committee chairman Michael McCaul, who tabled the bill, clarified that it demands that the Biden administration transfer frozen Russian sovereign assets to Ukraine. It also prohibits the return of Russian assets to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin until Russia compensates Ukraine.

McCaul went on to say that Russia, China, and Iran are collaborating to undermine the security of the United States and its allies. He warned that Putin's success in Ukraine would only embolden adversaries and jeopardize the national security interests of the US.

"It is beyond time that Russia pay for the war that it created," McCaul said.

Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the United States is considering legal options, together with the European Union, to redirect $300 billion in Russian assets to Ukraine’s economic reconstruction and other needs.

On Jan. 26, the European Council Legal Service developed a plan to use frozen assets of the Russian Central Bank, valued at approximately $36.8 billion, for financing Ukraine's reconstruction.

Ukraine is open to the possibility of attacking Russia’s oil and gas infrastructure if Moscow ramps up its targeting of Ukraine’s electric system this winter, Ukraine Energy Minister German Galushchenko said in an interview.


Galushchenko, speaking with POLITICO in Washington, D.C., after meeting with Biden administration officials and lawmakers, said Russia has regularly perpetrated cyberattacks against Ukraine’s electric grid and is expected to ramp up physical attacks as temperatures fall and people depend more on energy to heat their homes.


His comments came after Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said last month Ukraine, which has launched multiple attacks against Russian targets, would “respond” if Russia stepped up attacks on his country’s power grid this winter. This could open the door to the possibility that the European conflict could add more turmoil to global energy markets.


When asked if Zelenskyy's “response” could include Ukraine targeting Russia’s vast oil and gas operations — by far the biggest driver of its economy — Galushchenko replied, “It would only be fair.”


“When answering [Russia’s attack], we would answer by taking the same approach, attacking their energy infrastructure,” Galushchenko said.


Galushchenko stressed he was not a member of the Ukraine military and did not discuss the possible targeting of Russian energy operations with U.S. government officials. He is a member of the Ukraine national security and defense council.
