There was a negotiated settlement on the table 1.5 years, hundreds of thousands of lives, & billions upon billions ago that would have put a line of separation basically where the lines stand today & basically where lines of division in the country have been for decades. Yes they will continue the meat assault. Eastern Ukraine is where large deposits of oil and gas lay(also offshore in the Black Sea). Zelensky cares nothing about the people there. His donors want the natural resources.

Zelensky cares deeply about his people but yes this is just as much about making sure Ukraine has access to those resources as is their right and keeping orcs away from those natural resources.

More broadly this is about beating Russia so badly that they can never again invade a neighboring country.
