I know the rules...trying to type with one hand is brutal. Tomorrow, I have surgery to reattach 4 tendons In my rotator cuff and my bicep tendon. If anyone has advice let me know. It’s hard trying to take care of three young kids and can’t play. I follow this thread, but just in a bad spot.

Only advice is hopefully the hospital has 18 year old candy striper volunteers to wheel you around. Advice would be to take advantage if so.

Best of luck with your surgery. I know rehab and recovery time can be tedious, but let's hope the operations is a 100% success and your recover quickly and fully.

Get one of these and make sure it's powered, 3 rotator cuff surgeries in 5 years and this was by far my best investment. So much easier than dealing with ice packs. Some Ortho Doctors will rent you one but I bought mine off Ebay.

Have had an Open Achilles done as well and the Achilles was so much harder to come back from for me

PT is brutal for that one and takes a long time.

Friend had rotator cuff surgery a couple of years ago. He had to wear a strange arm/shoulder brace for several weeks then about 6 months to fully recover to being able to play golf.

Thank you all. Surgery went well. It took about 2 hours. Hopkins staff was amazing and doctor said there were no surprises

I did get the nerve block which makes you not feel you shoulder 4-8 hours. Arrived home had dinner, took meds and ready for a nap.
woke up for two hours and slept 3- 2.5 hour chunks overnight which is more than I have since injury

@tiderollsonu thank you for the recommendation . The hospital actually “gave”
me a motorized water cooler. I have to use it every 30 minutes when awake.
the doctor said my recovery will probably be around a year bc I severed several of the tendons. I go back in two weeks to check in but he said expect to have my arm locked in sling for a month, before staring rehab .

I know most nights won’t be like the first. I’ll try to add a few posts in case others face same

Let me know how the sleep goes. When I tore my labrum and damaged my AC joint sleep was terrible. Had to prop myself up on the couch.

I know this isn't advised, but you can wash narcotics down with whiskey and survive. After a few days you can actually sleep in a recliner using this method.

I spent the business week in the hospital and was discharged last Friday evening.
they installed a picc line that I have to inject antibiotics 3x’s a day (my wife is a saint). It runs from my elbow to my heart to disperse the medication.
Back to the doctor on Thursday and hope to have some good news to send afterwards.
It is painful but, the lack of sleep is overwhelming.

Damn, good thing you went for that checkup. My lab/nerd mind is curious what bacteria was infecting you, if you know?

Reminds me of a tragic situation involving a young doctor friend of my family and a shoulder infrction, many years ago. The doctor was an orthopedic surgeon. He had some shoulder pain, so had a coworker give him an injection at his office, cortisone or something like that...what he didn't know was that it was not his typical joint inflammation causing his shoulder pain, but a streptococcal infection, which the injection spread to his bloodstream. He was dead 2 days later.

I did have an interesting conversation with the head of infectious disease about the COVID vaccine.

I thought about it for a few days since my post- so apologies for a delayed response.
the head of infectious disease I met with daily while in the hospital. Currently and technically their rules are if you are within 3 feet you need to wear a mask, even in your room.
The first day he brought up vaccinations. I told him I wasn’t. He said I should be, he is.(even with his mask and shield on). I just brushed it off. He brought it up again the next day. I asked him why he was so concerned about it when I am laying in bed with a really bad infection that went septic in my shoulder joint and humerus in which if it went into my blood And turns into sepsis I have a 50% chance of mortality rate compared to corona 1%.
he said I just want you healthy. We went back and forth for a few minutes but ultimately I respected his opinion and he seemed to with mine. He didn’t bring it up the rest of the week.
Truthfully, in real time, it annoyed me.. looking back I think he was just giving his opinion. I know it’s not the best story. He believes his position and I do mine. He didn’t ask me to put a mask on while going through my chart and checking my lungs and didn’t bring it up again
I went back to my surgeon on Thursday and while pleased with the progress, I’ll have the picc in for 6 more weeks with antibiotics taken every 8 hours.
I go back Tuesday and hopefully have more positive results.
