My guess is they hate that the Ukrainian president has balls and will speak out so this is their way of neutering him along with giving Putin a clear signal that the US doesn't intend to allow the Ukrainians to take back Crimea.
The pipeline is a part of this bigger deal so that Puddin doesn't have to deal with conflict there and can instead focus his attention on trying to secure a deal with Iran while pursuing his Syrian dreams and dealing with China.

I have no earthly idea why we would even consider doing anything negative to the Ukraine. We wouldn't have a lot of Russian hardware in our inventory like the SU 27, Mig 29, Hind Helicopter, T80 tanks, etc if it wasn't for the Ukraine agreeing to sell them to us.
Russia isn't winning this war. They are taking insane casualties to gain a few hundred yards of territory. They haven't done anything other than capture a town that has little strategic importance in months.

How comical that Russia is claiming the capture of Soledar as some major victory. Although Ukraine still controls some parts of the city as of last night, so it hasn't been taken completely.
Here in a few months Ukraine will send about 60k NATO trained troops to the front line with a lot of new equipment. Russia will draft more soldiers and send them to the front lines with little to no training and sub par equipment.
It's going to be a human meat grinder. Russia is already over 110k KIA, they will get to 500k before they give up or are pushed out of Ukraine. Russia simply stands no chance now that NATO is supplying Ukraine.
In 100 years Russia will cease to exist as a significant population of people. Their population is an inverse pyramid generation wise, they simply don't have the young people to support their aging population. Even if Russia pulls off a miracle and wins this conflict, their days are numbered. I see this as a last gasp effort to make sure Russia can die on its own terms without being invaded.

Ukraine is getting tanks. Leopard 2 A6 from Germany/Europe and Abrams from us (plus Bradley Fighting Vehicles). Ukraine is going to have tank superiority over Russia, not in numbers but in range, power, and armor.
Russia has lost a lot of manpower this winter but has not gained much territory at all. Throwing bodies at a military target is a Russian tradition so nothing new, but they are losing thousands for what amounts to football fields here and there. Mostly conscripted prisoners serving with Wagner Group, but it's manpower they need nonetheless. Russia will need another round of mobilization, at least 500k, if they plan to mount a serious offensive this Spring.
Experts think Ukraine will try to retake Crimea in a few months. Without a significant Russian mobilization, and soon, I think Ukraine will be successful with their new NATO firepower. Russian supply lines would be cut in half, not something Russia is in a great position to overcome.
One thing people in the general public are not aware of that I mentioned earlier: NATO countries have been training Ukrainian troops. All this new equipment takes months to learn how to operate, not to mention the maintenance required. Especially the Abrams tanks. But military leadership was ahead of the approval - some 60k-ish Ukrainians have been training on this equipment this winter. This is why you see this equipment being shipped to Ukraine already, including spare parts. Ukraine is going to be ready to roll once the mud clears.
This is now a proxy war between Russia and NATO. It will be interesting to see how Russia responds because I think they're going to get their ass kicked. And they'll have a new NATO supported power on their borders. The internal battle between the conventional Russian military command and Wagner should be entertaining to watch, that internal struggle for power has already caused battlefield delays and missed opportunities.
