TLDR: Pay the middle and lower tier guys more and they'll sink the LIV tour quickly.
I think the biggest deal isn't going to be for the top players like McElroy, Justin Thomas, etc, but for the rest of the guys. If you regularly finish in the top 10, you're already making bank in the tournaments, plus, likely killing it in sponsorships. What about the guys that are in the 20-200 range? Yeah, it's cool competing against the top tier guys, but if you can get yourself some guaranteed money by playing in this other league, why not do it instead of missing cuts and barely getting paid when you finish #64 in a PGA event?
I mean, it's not chump change, but there were a handful of guys in this past Canada tournament that finished in that range and got paid around $18,500 for 4 tournament days, plus the practice rounds. I don't know if these guys get put up for free in hotels or not, but I'm sure they still have to pay for their flights, cars, meals, etc. That 18k won't go too far to pay for all of that, plus their regular home and living expenses. Not to mention the 80 or so guys that didn't even make the cut. Those guys get nothing.
If the PGA wants to hold on to their guys, they need to figure out a way to make it more lucrative for the other guys too, not just the top 10 guys every tournament. At the very least, pay these guys 10k or so for coming to play in the tournament, and then 25-50 for making the weekend. Or maybe give a living wage to all of the guys that qualify for their PGA players card, and keep everything else as is. Imagine being the 100 best doctor in the country, but scraping to make a living because you're not one of the 10 best.
