Part of the industry is in a recession but there are still startups hiring like crazy. Fundraising is below peak but there is still money out there for ideas. I’ve been in leadership and funding of 6 tech startups, and never have I paid less than the prevailing wage for H1B’s. It’s illegal and your H1B applications just won’t get approved. Offshored engineers cost 1/3 to 1/2 of US based engineers. Quality is worse and causes the need for additional iteration and rewrites by smart US engineers.

The bottom line is that our schools decreased in the amount of good engineers and product people coming out relative to need. I would much rather have the intelligent H1B’s here than the dregs of the earth brought in by Biden.
I worked at a Research Non-Profit. Although they paid the prevailing wage to the H1Bs. They liked hiring them over US citizens because you had their ass until they got a green card or something.

They could not easily leave for another company because they would have to have a sponsor. Not impossible, but it is uncertain and a serious pain in the arse. The US citizens could leave at any time if you treated them like shit. However, the foreign workers could not leave and got treated like shit. It is similar to grad school, but with a higher salary.

If you are and H1B and you get fired, you are seriously fooked. You have to just take the shit.

It is like being an indentured servant. That is why companies love hiring them. It is not about the salary. It is about stability and competition.

It was definitely that way back in the 90’s, but it is a little different now. They can leave for other employment, if the new employer will accept their transfer petition. Assuming it falls under the annual caps of around 80k applicants, then they can start work before approval. If they are fired there are a few options available but eventually they may have to be sent back overseas if they don’t find other employment or start advanced schooling.

In a step that has shocked the entire world, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) carried out an airstrike on the weapons depot in Tartus, Syria on 16 December 2024. Through the massive strike, Israel reportedly destroyed the Scud missile facility located in Syria.

However, reports are speculating that the damage caused by the strike was more serious and a small nuclear weapon might have been used by Israel.

As a result of the Israeli attack, an earthquake of magnitude 3 also occurred along with the massive explosion. The earthquake was so huge that it was felt up to Iznik in Turkey, 820 km away.
