Nope in Medellin

Ok so I see your "Shocking" emojis that I am having my surgery in Medellin and not Houston.

Here are some facts:

Healthcare -

The Colombia healthcare system is one of the world’s best. The World Health Organization ranks it as the 22nd most efficient in the world, above Canada, the United States, and Australia.

Colombia’s hospitals are among the best in South America. In particular, Medellin has some of the best facilities in Latin America. The city is also well known as a destination for cosmetic surgery and transplant surgery.

Colombian physicians receive an excellent education and many complete a part of their training abroad. It’s common for physicians to be bilingual in Spanish and English.

When the World Health Organization ranked the healthcare systems of 191 countries, Colombia came in at #22. That is better than Canada at #30 and the United States at #37.

On top of this, when financial publication América Economía put together their latest annual list of Latin America’s top 63 hospitals, 26 of those hospitals were based in Colombia. That means that 41% of the top Latin American hospitals are located in Colombia.

My Physician -

Graduate for General Surgery, Specialty in Orthopedic & Trauma Surgery, Specialty in Orthoscopic Surgery for the Shoulder & Knee in Sports Medicine

Education -

The Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Faculty of Medicine in Bogotá, Colombia is one of the leading medical schools in Colombia and Latin America. Its structure lies within the campus of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana and most practice takes place at its university hospital, the Hospital Universitario San Ignacio (HUSI). In the past 75 years the faculty has been home to many remarkable Colombian physicians and scientists known locally and internationally.

Experience -

14 years as a surgeon and has done over 1400 Rotator-Cuff Surgeries. He also uses the most advanced Smith & Nephew System for Rotator Cuff Arthroscopic Surgeries

Additional "Intangibles" -

Was the surgeon for Maluma a Grammy Award Winning Singer from Colombia he has a net worth of $22 million and 63 million fans on IG - basically this guy can afford or choose any surgeon in Colombia as one of the most famous people here. That's a plus for me.

Also the surgeon for Mateo Carvajal who won the Super-Human contest for Colombia another famous person here who can go to any doctor.

In addition, he has worked on Colombian athletes in Soccer/MMA, famous producers, models, etc. These are all people of means here that can afford private healthcare and choose their physician.

Logistics -

Round Trip to Houston and would have to stay in hotel or impose on friends for about a week until I could fly back home. Also risking accidental injury when flying due to being around lots of dumb-ass travelers in a compact spaces. Carrying luggage is also a potential problem.

Here the hospital and my physical therapist are very close to my house - less than 10 minutes by car. Post surgery physical therapy is only a 9 minute walk from my house.

I can also hire a nurse to stay with me for the first few days to help me when needed, cook, go get me food etc at a very reasonable rate.

It's also important that your physical therapist and doctor are close together - mine not only are close by they work together.

Cost & Misc -

Even if I come back to Houston my Out of Pocket is $5000, and that's if they will cover an out of country accident + travel cost. My cash cost here for using a private doctor and hospital with full-surgery/anesthesia team will be around $3750

My physical therapy here is $35 a session, which includes Laser Therapy vs Houston $30 Co-Pay and no Laser.

In addition, adding PRP 3-4 treatments is +/- $200 each versus close to $1000 in Houston.

I also can opt for real stem-cell treatments as well.

So there it is - I'm always up for constructive criticism of my thesis/actions.

If there is something I'm missing or you see that I don't please feel free to discuss.

I want to get this right.

Thanks LAC Fam

Coming from a Texas surgeon, do it there. Do it, IMHO, for all the reasons you stated.

Yeah don't see the issue. It's work that is done a million times over all around the world, and I don't think it's something where outcomes are appreciably different from one country to the next.
