When I was transferred to NAS Corpus Christi, a Cat 3 hurricane hit the next morning. It tore CCTex apart including the NAS. On Friday, 5 days after the hurricane, there was a change of command ceremony on base. Nobody at NAS CCTex was able to participate in the ceremony due to no fresh clothing because of the lack of power. So, the Navy bused in sailors from NAS Kingsville and NAS Beeville to pose for the ceremony. You know, you can't postpone Admiral's ego trips even if the base had been almost destroyed.
Anyway, it was around 100 degrees and those sailors were dropping like flies standing in formation. I was on the ambulance crew assigned to the festivities. We ran ourselves ragged picking those people up.
Buddy of mine and I were so parched that we drove to Kingsville that night just to sit in an a/c restaurant and drink iced tea.
Over the next few weeks, the dispensary and hospital on base treated several sailors bitten by rattlesnakes cleaning up the debris.
