These were commercial airliners. The wife pointed it out. She's somewhat red-pilled but was completely freaked out by it. There were at least 3 that we saw.

Airplanes take off and land into the wind. The faster air passes over and under the wings, the more lift. If the wind was consistent at the plane, the engines would maintain the planes location while fighting against the wind that is maintaining the planes lift. From the ground it would look like the plane is hovering, but it is continuing to gain altitude. Then it will maneuver to find a better trajectory to destination that minimizes fuel demand.
