@Rebarcock. The more i read about richard Byrd the more skeptical i am.
I just downloaded a paper by a guy from the byrd polar research center. In 1927 byrd supposedly flew over the north pole, first flight over the north pole ever. After the fact many people came not saying that his plane wasn't even in the air long enough for the required miles to reach the north pole.
His co-pilot later confessed they didnt reach the north pole because of an oil leak and they just circled out of range of anyone to see them before they returned.
His notepad that he used had calculations erased out showing them over 2 hours from the north pole and replaced with ones showing them at the north pole.
Notes in his note pad did not match up with what he put in his official report.
For some reason he decided not to dump the 100s of flags over the north pole showing that they'd been there.
The guy was obviously a great pilot and leader. My opinion is he was also a very elaborate story teller.
