Why were the Israelites constantly tempted to fall into idolatry and adopt the canannite gods? Because it worked. Even with the foreknowledge that the God of their fathers would punish them, they repeatedly fell back into idolatry. They saw the gold in the cities, their crops bursting at harvest, and were tempted into idolatry. Until God showed up as he did on Mt. Carmel, and the nation would repent, at least until that generation passed.

Scripture is better understood and becomes more real when we realize that the spiritual powers and gods of the old world were actual beings, instead of just being fanciful stories that backwards, gullible hicks made up 4500 years ago.
