Charleston, SC golf course recs

Hoping to take a trip to visit SC and NC in April this year. Any golf course recommendations for the Charleston area? Obviously don't have connections for private courses, so preferably recs for courses that are open to poors like me.

Patriots point is the closest public course. It’s probably $120 or so for 18 holes and has great views, but average course imo. 10 min from downtown.

If you are willing to travel 30-45 minutes you have all the Kiawah resort golf. 4-5 different courses including the Ocean Course. They are all good courses but I like Osprey the best (aside from the ocean course).

Just to the north, 20 min from downtown, there is Wild Dunes golf. (2) 18 hole courses that are kind of tight and on the water. Great courses but I have heard casual golfers say it’s tough and they lose a lot of balls.

Best private course in the area is Bulls Bay followed by Charleston Country club.

Not sure what kind of golfer you are but we will help you find the right places. And if I can’t play golf while you are in town maybe we can at least grab a drink.

Thanks brother,, I appreciate it. I'll look up some of those courses tomorrow. We haven't booked our house yet, so I'm not certain where we'll end up, but nice to have some good options.

I'm not that good, but my son is golfing on his HS team and really wants to play when we go out there, so it would just be the two of us. Depending on the day, the course, and if I've practiced at all, I'll shoot anywhere between 80 and 100. We won't be traveling with our clubs so the scores probably won't be great but as long as the weather is good, it'll be a good time.

You get out and play much? I'm anywhere from 0-2x per month typically depending on time of year. Wish it was more, but oh well, gotta take what you can get sometimes.

There are others I can look up I forget the. Ames but all public and good courses.
Kiawah if you have the cash.
Wild Dunes on isla of palms has 2 nice ocean courses. Tight and windy but good courses

That reminds me the Muni completed a $3 million (pre-inflation dollars) and re-did a few of the holes. Haven't been out there yet but been meaning to go check it out.

And like @DuckDitchtiger said, Stono Ferry is a great course. Probably 20-25 minutes from downtown. The back 9 has a few holes along the river which are pretty cool.


From what you said @LVRebel, I'd suggest Patriots Point. It the closest to downtown area, pretty easily accessible, they have club rentals, and really great views of the Charleston Harbor. Its a good enough golf course. I play to about a 9 handicap and play a few times a year out there and enjoy it.

I haven't played the muni since I lived in West Ashley almost 20 years ago. Actually don't even play golf anymore, but when we were poor, right out of college, we played there a bit. I think you could play after 6 or 7pm, and pay around $10 and play til dark.

Pretty cheap fun in the summertime...but then I bought my boat, and any nice day where I wanted to have some fun outside and burn some money, it was on the water with hot girls in bikinis and not hacking my way around a golf course with 3 other dudes.

Offshore fishing would be an all day event. To offshore fish you need to leave really early in the morning in order to get out to the gulfstream. Inshore fishing is a great option to and you can expect to catch flounder, sea trout, red-fish etc. I'll ask around for some good guides and get back to this thread shortly.

As far as history stuff goes I would suggest a walking tour and / or horse and buggy ride. Walking is really the best way to see the city as the streets are kind of narrow and parking is kind of tough.

I usually recommend that people go to see Ft Moultrie instead of Ft Sumter, which you can drive to, and is pretty much the same thing as Ft Sumter just in a more accessible location. Ft Moultrie is on Sullivans island which is a cool beach town and great spot to go to the beach for the day.

Take a guided trip to sight cast for redfish. I can give you a couple great captains' names if you are interested in a 4 hr trip. Also, pretty touristy, but I have been on a couple of the carraige tours downtown and they are really great if you get a good tourguide.

Have also fished with Capt Jordan Pate. He is great as well, but keeps his boat up the road an hour or so, at the Georgetown marina. He is a great guide, but not sure if he guides in the Charleston area...some big redfish in Georgetown too though. His cell # is- (843) 814-7900

Both these guys stay booked, but if you can't get a trip with them, they probably can recommend another guide. We found capt Pate this way. He was recommended by capt Waits when he was booked up a couple summers ago.

Middleton plantation there is an abbey i forget 1st name. Boone hall is cool. Great for a concert or rib or cooking contest or festivals. You can got 20yards and not hit historical

Off shore the wadamlawcallit i took 4 yr ago. Past couple they were upgrading. If up w fuel id expect 3500 or more slightly. Yatesea is david Yates. Best guide in county. Trip 350hp Yama and no bitching just fishing. Centerconsole and you go 70+
