Let's pretend the real cases are 5x that number, so 925 million.

And let's even err on the side of all 925 million getting it and having it at the same exact time and all have even odds of catching it...

That's 12% infected.

If the vaccine is 95% effective, of those 12% that caught it, 95% wouldn't have caught it had they had the shot. You go from 12% chance of infection to .6% chance of infection. Under this new variant and a 50% efficacy... that number is now a 6% chance of catching covid.

It's an absolute maximum 5.4% change in odds of catching covid assuming completely unreasonable assumptions about age and stage of life.

You really want to get crazy, the mortality rate is 1.5% of infections. So the odds of dying go from .009% to .09%. If I were in the press I'd say epsilon covid is 10 times more likely to kill you.

I wish I didn't get it but thought I would be forced to for work. That said, my entire house got it last week, except me.

However if they can name it greek letters why can't we just start naming it after actual houses. The Delta Delta Delta variant really goes down easy. The Delta Gamma variant is a bit snobby and attacks rich men. Pi Beta Phi attacks only those who smoke a lot of weed. Would be awesome.
