You want me to spend any amount of time to explain that trying to bury the types of electric transmission lines that would prevent massive outages in hurricanes wouldn't cause your electric bills to quadruple? Someone needs to go fuck themselves. But it isn't me. I can't believe even a few of you went down this path.

If you want a dissertation about what comprises every bit of your electric bill, I can do that. But one component is the cost of keeping the grid running at a reasonable level of reliability. Burying the high voltage transmission system to prevent a few days of outages every few years would literally quadruple your annual utility bill. Probably more. Burying your neighborhood distribution lines is simple. Burying a 345kV transmission line that feeds cities is like building an underground subway across an entire state.

But, fuck me, right?

Nobody said anything about burying transmission lines (even though there are some being undergrounded). Damage to those type of structures is usually limited and local to the most severe storm impacts. You think we have trees sitting on transmissions lines for a week after a hurricane? Florida has few trees even tall enough to reach. If there is damage it’s prioritized and usually fixed pretty quickly.

After Matthew FPL got $318 million dollars in storm recovery costs. Storm was a cat 2 and didn’t even make landfall in Florida. Thats one relatively minor storm in 2016 dollars. Guess what - bills went up to cover it. Why not invest some of that money on the front end and enjoy the benefits for multiple storms over multiple years while also increasing reliability and reducing emergency repair costs? As a lifelong Florida resident who pays utility bills, I think this is a good investment. Not across the board but in a planned and targeted fashion. Check out FPLs storm secure underground program.

This is very misleading. The US taxpayers are not subsidizing Coca Cola. Whether or not SNAP benefit should be used to buy “junk food” is up for debate. But, labeling purchases made with SNAP benefits as “subsidizing” any company is a misrepresentation of the word “subsidize”. If buying a product, is “subsidizing”a company, we are all guilty.
