I will be very surprised if that report of “required in person visits” to the SSA office is true. SSA field offices do not have sufficient staff to implement a change from online/telephone service to “in person” service. The SSA.gov website does not reflect any upcoming change in service delivery. Even if SSA is considering a return to “in person” service delivery, it could not be implemented by the end of March.
I found additional information about the SSA “in person” service. You can still use your My Social Security Account to change direct deposit information. If you don’t have a My Social Security Account, you must go to the SSA office to change direct deposit information (i.e., can no longer call the SSA 800# and change direct deposit information). You can also still use your My Social Security Account to file an application for SSA benefits. You can still file an application for SSA benefits via telephone but will have to go to the SSA office to prove identity. So, there will be increased traffic in the SSA field offices but it is not a return to the “in person” service that was common before online services were established. There’s an article on al.com about the changes.
