September 25, 1987: The booty collected from the pirate ship Whydah, which sunk off Cape Cod in 1717, was auctioned off. The worth was around $400 million. Whydah had been captained by Captain Samuel Bellamy, also called Black Sam. It is the only verified pirate shipwreck ever discovered, which gives us significant archaeological insight into pirate life during the early 18th century.
