I almost had a similar incident last week in Ruston, La. I won't get into the whole story but I was at a hotel on the service rd. and I 20. The front desk allowed me a noon checkout instead of 11 since I had a meeting with my customer. I arrived back at 1120 with the maid pacing up and down. I went to unlock my door and she says your dog bolted when opened the door. obvious freak out and cussing that lady out. in the end I found her 2 miles up the road in a retention pond. While I didn't experience a heart breaking loss like you, but I came closer than I wanted to.
