- Smith-Mundt Act (SMA) of 1948 authorized the US State Dept to engage in propagandizing foreign countries as a form of public diplomacy (via media etc). It also strictly prohibited that same propaganda from being disseminated to the public in America.
- In 2012, the Smith-Mundt Modernization Act (SMMA) was buried in the Natl Defense Authorization Act - this repealed the initial SMA of 48 and also LIFTED the prohibition of domestic propaganda, permitting the govt and media to lie to the American public. Done under the Obama administration, of course.
