Elon Musk didn’t name the database at which he was looking. What he said was he found weird things in the “Social Security System”. Then, talked about finding very old people in the system with no date of death recorded. Based on my 34 years of working for the Social Security Administrstion, I know that the SSA has several very large databases that are used for totally different purposes. Based on his description of what DOGE found and my personal knowledge of the SSA databases, I knew Elon Musk was referring to information in the Numident Database (Numident is an acronym for Numerical Identification System). The Numident database is a record of every Social Security Number that has ever been issued. Once issued, a SSN is never deleted from the Numident Database.
There’s an article on Yahoo Finance about the SSA Systems. The name of the article is: Elon Musk claims that 150-year-olds are getting Social Security benefits. Is it a wild rant — or is there truth to it?
There’s also an article on 6abc.com entitled: Musk Misreads Social Security Data, Millions of Dead People Not Getting Benefits, Experts Say. Even though the article is from abc and has a negative slant, it does have good information about SSA systems.
I would have attached the articles but I do not know how to do that.
I am retired and have no inside knowledge. I do think it is entirely possible that employees at the SSA Headquarters in Baltimore didn’t explain the various SSA databases to Elon Musk or made him think the Numident Database was something it isn’t.
When my Dad died as soon as the death certificate was filed SS immediately wanted the last payment back. Within a day or two, we got a letter from them. Apparently, they require all county clerks to let them know when a DC is filed. Too bad, voter data bases don't require that.

Not sure what you’re trying to imply here exactly. Are you saying these people weren’t getting paid? The reason I ask is Musk has quoted that these people most often were signed up for “MAX BENEFITS”….or maybe I didn’t hear if “these people” were from Numident system

State death records are interfaced with the SSA Master Beneficiary Record Database which is the database of people who have received/are currently receiving SSA benefits.

Elon Musk did not say MAX Social Security benefits. He said MAX taxpayer funded benefits and specifically mentioned Medicaid.
There are lots of taxpayer funded benefits that have nothing to do with Social Security Benefits. Things like housing, Medicaid, Child Tax Credits, Earned Income Tax Credits, Food Stamps, TANF, etc. Because Elon Musk also talked about how many noncitizens are issued a Social Security Number, I think people assume MAX Benefits is MAX Social Security benefits. But, Elon Musk did not say they were getting Social Security benefits, he said MAX taxpayer funded benefits.
