Pat Flood (@rebarcock) passed away 9/21/25. Pat played a huge role in encouraging the devolopmemt of this site and donated the very first dollar to get it started. Check the thread at the top of the board for the obituary and please feel free to pay your respects there. I am going to get all the content from that thread over to his family so they can see how many people really cared for Pat outside of what they ever knew. Pat loved to tell stories and always wanted everyone else to tell stories. I think a great way we can honor Pat is to tell a story in his thread (also pinned at the top of the board).

My family (especially my husband) lives in fear that I will eventually get my way, bit by bit/animal by animal, and turn our back property into an animal sanctuary.
I have deer that live in my woods. I love watching them. I'll have to search for the pic of the buck that casually strolled out one morning. We were both shocked to be looking at each other.
They even got used to Guinness chasing them and would play along. I've had people try to come onto my property to go after the deer because they won't stop eating the hostas.
I might restrain myself from shooting you trying to break into my house (okay, no I won't, but I'll feel a twinge of regret and say a prayer). I will not hesitate to shoot to keep anybody off my property to protect the animals that are just trying to live their lives....We're not in Alaska or nowhere North Dakota. Nobody is going to eat the venison they shoot in my backyard in Dayton, Ohio. DLM and Dots are right here. Do not shoot my deer.
Edit... found the pic. Until that morning, I had no idea he was back there. It's fuzzy because my camera was smudged, but we were about 20 feet apart. He froze and just watched me. After that morning, I guess he figured I was no threat and would just come out to graze and roam whenever he felt like it.

Clemson and the University of South Carolina are debating whether to cancel people who died over a hundred years ago by removing their names from buildings. Amazon is canceling books they disagree with from being sold on their website. There’s even a group out there trying to cause Trump Administration staffers to become destitute by making them unemployable to other companies.
I describe cancel culture as a sickness because that’s exactly what it is. Cancel culture kills free speech and the freedom to speak your mind. It limits debate, restricts conversation, and makes our country more tribal. Cancel culture holds us back and prevents America from being our best. Every year we hope that society will collectively recognize that this cancel culture phenomenon has gone too far and return us to a sense of sanity once again, yet every year it gets worse. I pray that it gets better. It is impossible to legislate the human heart and attempting to do so would likely create more problems. But this toxic environment of 21st century book burning must end. We can recognize that societal values have changed without purging our past. We can have rigorous debate and disagreements, without attempting to cast out from society those we disagree with. We can all buck up and grow some tougher skin. We can also do more to remember the Golden Rule.
