Cities run by corporations? What could go wrong?

The idea being vehemently opposed by the Democratic Socialists of America gives me pause, but I just don't see how this turns out well in the long run.

This is the inevitable path the Democratic Socialists are taking us down. Eventually government will grow so big that 100% of its resources are devoted to making payroll and keeping the bureaucracy alive, with none going to the people they’re supposedly aiding. This will lead to corporations providing their own security as every protection afforded by a stable government will wither away, and eventually their spheres of influence will expand. The only way to have avoided this eventual outcome would have been to embrace republican (little R) federalized government.
