More realistically is what if SpaceX captured and mined an asteroid of all the rare earth minerals and sent them home. Like gold, platinum, iridium etc. It would alter the world economy pretty quick. This has been posited by musk before i believe and is not as far fetched as some would like to believe.

Interesting.. I think its absolutely possible, wouldn't surprise me if we didn't already have this technology ready... So send multiple mining drones to land on an asteroid passing by earth

There was a show on TV a couple of years ago about two dudes going around the country searching for meteor fragments. There was good money in what they found. Many people or organizations wanted to buy them. My guess is that it would depend on the circumstances and size of the meteor whether the Govt would confiscate it. You can bet if something the size of a football came crashing down on your property it would make such a noise that many gov't agencies would appear. Something that size would be worth a lot of money.
