• Pat Flood (@rebarcock) passed away 9/21/25. Pat played a huge role in encouraging the devolopmemt of this site and donated the very first dollar to get it started. Check the thread at the top of the board for the obituary and please feel free to pay your respects there. I am going to get all the content from that thread over to his family so they can see how many people really cared for Pat outside of what they ever knew. Pat loved to tell stories and always wanted everyone else to tell stories. I think a great way we can honor Pat is to tell a story in his thread (also pinned at the top of the board).

Let’s weed out some retards: what’s the answer

Why is the Order of Operations Important?
The math order of operations is important because it will ensure you get the correct answer. Here is an example to illustrate two ways to calculate 1 + 2 × 3

Incorrect: 1 plus 2 equals 3, and then 3 times 3 equals 9.
Correct: 2 times 3 equals 6, and then 6 plus 1 equals 7.

I have decided this is a Kobayashi Maru (star trek) scenario.

there is not enough information provided.

Are the two shoes and two whistles represented as multiplication or addition.
EX: as Shoe + Shoe (X + X), or as whistle x whistle (Y x Y)? because that means the the whistle is indeed 2 either way. BUT the shoe then becomes either 5 (addition) or 3.17 rounded (multiplication to get 10 rounded) with final answers being rounded)

then the dude with a whistle sitting on him, is it multiplication, addition, or even division (whistle over dude)? Giving three different numbers entirely.

therefore Kobayashi Maru. The game is rigged and cant be won.

also my final answer: 5 + (3x2) = 11

And I am indeed retarded.

@QuanChi we gonna get the actual answer. (And if you tell me it was in the wording NOT the Picture. I will fuck BOTH of your parents as payback.)

I get 16, unless there’s something to that order of operation thing. (Haven’t had a math related class since 1981 and don’t work with equations).

Shoe = 5
Dude with whistle = 5 but without whistle =3
whistle = 2

5+3x2=16

DON PARDO! Tell him what's he's won!

3*2 is 6 and 6+5 is 16?
I think the correct numerical values are assigned to the images. What I was doing was 5+3 = 8 and 8x2= 16.

If there is some order of operation requirement as someone suggested and it is necessary to multiply first (I have no idea on this) then it might be 3x2=6 and 6+5= 11.

I'll do it...

Shoe= 5
Whistle= 2
Mexican= 3

(5+5) + (5+5) + (5+5) = 30

(5+5) + (3+2) + (3+2) = 20

(3+2) + (2+2) + (2+2) = 13

5 + 3*2 = 5+6 = 11

11 is yore final answer

I would argue that having a single shoe adds no value, so it should be assigned a 0 in the last line. Plus, the Chinaman (not the preferred nomenclature dude) doesn't have his whistle in the last picture, which makes him ineffective as a coach as well, so any number multiplied by 0 is 0, and then add the 0 for the single shoe, so your answer is zero.
