Women Are Getting Sterilized After Donald Trump's Victory: 'Only Option'

Published Nov 30, 2024

It's not a procedure you'd expect a 28-year-old to be planning. But for Lydia Echols from Texas, having her fallopian tubes removed is the price she's willing to pay to ensure her reproductive rights.

Newsweek spoke to five women who have either undergone sterilization procedures or plan to in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump's victory on November 5. They all expressed fear their reproductive choices will be taken from them under Trump's administration.
They have no idea how few people care.

New rule: if Donald Trump is getting back his old job, then it might not be worth staying at your current job. That’s the premise that Bill Maher floated on his “Club Random” podcast speaking with Jane Fonda in an episode released Sunday. While interviewing the actor and activist, Maher expressed exhaustion at the prospect of covering Trump’s administration for the next four years.
“I mean I may quit,” Maher told Fonda. “I don’t want to do another… I did Trump. I did all the Trump stuff before anybody. I called him a con man before anybody. I did, ‘He’s a mafia boss.’ I was the one who said he wasn’t going to concede the election. I’ve done it. I’ve seen this fucking—”
More from Variety
“Well then how come he’s so hostile to Jimmy Kimmel and not to you?” Fonda interrupted.
“He’s very hostile to me. He tweets about me every week. Every week he accidentally watches my show and goes, ‘Low ratings loser!’ I’m bored with it,” Maher answered. “The show is the politics. There is no other thing. And he’s going to dominate the news like he always does.”

A warning has been issued to travelers over the spread of three diseases, including the Marburg virus. It’s a close cousin of Ebola that’s been dubbed the “bleeding eye” virus due to one of its symptoms.
Marburg, Mpox and Oropouch (commonly called “sloth fever”) are spreading in multiple countries, according to the UK Department of Health’s site, Travel Health Pro.
Marburg is a rare but “severe hemorrhagic fever that can cause serious illness and death,” the U.S. Centers for Disease Control says, adding that there is no treatment or vaccine for it. But, if detected early, supportive care with rehydration and symptomatic treatment improves survival, according to the Africa CDC.
Initial symptoms, the CDC says, include fever, chills, headaches, a rash with both flat and raised bumps, and sore throat. As the Cleveland Clinic explains, because it’s hemorrhagic, it “damages blood vessels and causes bleeding” — often from the eyes, nose, mouth, or vagina.

There have been 66 illnesses and 15 deaths in Rwanda, according to the CDC, but many more may be infected. The CDC also says there are no known cases outside of Rwanda, and the risk of infection with this virus in the U.S. is low.
I saw a lot of “CDC says” and didn’t read anything else.
