• Pat Flood (@rebarcock) passed away 9/21/25. Pat played a huge role in encouraging the devolopmemt of this site and donated the very first dollar to get it started. Check the thread at the top of the board for the obituary and please feel free to pay your respects there. I am going to get all the content from that thread over to his family so they can see how many people really cared for Pat outside of what they ever knew. Pat loved to tell stories and always wanted everyone else to tell stories. I think a great way we can honor Pat is to tell a story in his thread (also pinned at the top of the board).

No. No. No.

The income tax act of 1913 only established the Federal Income Tax. The Current Payment Tax Act of 1943 (Signed by FDR) established WITHHOLDINGS from your paycheck. It is said that this Act changed the income tax % received from individuals from 1% to 11%. And it has only gotten higher ever since.

If the 1913 Act were still the law of the land, there is no way our Federal Income Taxes would be anything close to what they are today.

I'd venture to guess that fewer than 50% of those filing tax returns even look at what they actually paid in taxes. They only think "did I get money back?" or "do I owe anything?".

As you can tell, this is my biggest hot button. I fucking hate the subterfuge that was established in 1943 to steal from the small minded.

This is true. Rush Limbaugh said for decades if Americans had to send in quarterly payments, there'd be an overnight tax revolt.

The sad truth is most people are so bad at math they have no idea what they're looking at on a paystub or a W-2.
