Pat Flood (@rebarcock) passed away 9/21/25. Pat played a huge role in encouraging the devolopmemt of this site and donated the very first dollar to get it started. Check the thread at the top of the board for the obituary and please feel free to pay your respects there. I am going to get all the content from that thread over to his family so they can see how many people really cared for Pat outside of what they ever knew. Pat loved to tell stories and always wanted everyone else to tell stories. I think a great way we can honor Pat is to tell a story in his thread (also pinned at the top of the board).

I woke up with a bat in my room a few years ago and was told by my doctor to go get the rabies shots because our insurance covered it 100% so why take the chance. The most painful shots I've ever had. Two in my thighs, two in low back and one in the arm.

They changed the production of rabies vaccines many years ago. When I took them they were made in duck embryos. Now they are made in human diploid cells. This is to make them more tolerable by people. I had 12 shots whereas nowadays it's 5 like you had.
I had mine in my arm over a 12 week period. It was to inoculate me so I could do autopsies on the animals sent to us...and some were quite nasty. The only shot I literally wanted to grab the MDs arm and remove the syringe. Funny, I was working for the State Health Dept. The buildings were full of MDs and RNs, yet I had to go to an outside MD to have the shots administered. State paid for the vaccines and outside MD because they didn't want the liability of administering them.
The need for domestic manufacturing continues to be front and center.
I was watching a video yesterday, another problem, it is so expensive to ship the empty containers back now, there is a shortage of crates. Each issue creates another new issue and it goes on and on
Should be the wake up call to all but it won't be.
I was told that if I ever get exposed to another rabid animal and require treatment to be sure to tell the MD that I already had the vaccinations. Apparently, there is a different treatment protocol for those of us who had the shots.
