The hanging chad Florida incident accelerated adoption of electronic voting machines in places like GA. At the time any logical person could see there could be issues with the diebold system. Reports of failed memory cards, you never knew what was done with the card, etc. At the time it was questioned why not have a paper printout that could be used to audit the accounts.
A GT professor was hired to prove the bias that the voting system was fine, and he demoed it fine. Amazingly NCR relocated their head quarters from Ohio to GA.
Fast forward 20 years, and they finally appeased and misdirected everyone by having a paper printed ballot. Well this was obviously a cover.
Audits of these voting machine companies should include open source of the code, along with the code version number is linked to a public build number.
