My parents grew up pretty close to Joplin and still have a farm about 10-15 miles north of town. We drove through that area a few months after the storm. The debris was all cleaned up but building hadn’t really started yet. Just concrete slabs and foundations. It was definitely surreal.

My wife teaches third grade. This is her first year back in the classroom in about 8 years because she has been home with the kids (she did get her masters degree and worked part time the first couple and last couple of those years).
anyhoo, our county uses a computer based testing program for assessments and the kids work on it all year. Long story short - the kids who have not been learning in person for the Last 1.5 years are a full year behind the kids who have. Many of her third graders test out at end of first grade level. This is common sense to me but now she has data and we can see it. It’s a travesty what has been done to all the kids that missed out on learning in person.
we live in a nice area with good schools. It makes me furious to think about all the other support kids in less fortunate areas missed out on. No doubt many kids have gone hungry, been abused and missed out on medical care because our “leaders” have failed us.
