Yes I did know that. The smart meters used here have induced many home fires at the meters too. Thankfully the utility where I live hasn't tried to do this yet. I've seen people lock out their yards or keep dogs in it so they can't get to meter and that has workedYeah did you know "smart meters" with IoT modem upgrades that've been rolled out worldwide for a few years now, are not only capable of remotely connecting to any "smart" appliances/devices within homes, but also capable of basically using them as data gathering extensions of the IoT network, with or without our awareness.
I've been refusing to allow the electric company here to install an IoT modem at my place since early 2023. Not because I have any "smart" shit here to worry about them hacking into, but because of the insane about of data they can gather from the electricity meter alone is enough to infer highly accurate personal information as well as creating predictive profiles about residents, such as: what & when specific appliances/devices are being used, how many people live at a residence, when each resident is home or not, what specific devices each resident uses, each residents sleeping, eating, working, etc patterns, and much much muuuuuuch more.
Oh yeah, the IoT meters also enable utility companies to remotely control the power flow to each property as well as to individual appliances (both "smart" & non-"smart") within. As in, they can cut power to, eg: your washing machine or hot water cylinder or whatever, if and when they decide to. I recently discovered (with the utility company I'm using) this IoT remote power allocation clause is actually included in the electric company contract as a standard. I mean, they're not saying they might do it, they're saying they intend to normalize doing it. Crazy shit man.
If your meter isn't already secured, I'd strongly encourage you to at least slap a couple of locks on the meter housing, coz eventually when the meter ghosts show up and if they can easily access it, they absolutely will and it only takes 10-15 minutes to install these IoT modems.Yes I did know that.
