not sure entered the innards of the ship via the panel he came out of. Assumed he ended up there after being thrown about while riding a rocket ship into space

Agreed. And pretty unrealistic, no rocket is going into space without a myriad of backup systems. It is ridiculous to think you have 1 CO2 scrubber, pretty much the most necessary piece of equipment on the ship.
