In this thread, we discuss anything health related, including exercise, vitamins, supplements, etc. Share some articles or experiences that you have had, or things you do to stay healthy. What vitamins or supplements do you take, and why? What exercises do you do to get or stay fit? What help or information do you want to get from others?

I'll start with a vitamin related thing.

Vitamin D and K supplementation:
Prior to covid, I never really looked too much into taking vitamins, or paid much attention to their role in good overall health. Fortunately, I've been really healthy, so I guess I didn't really have the need to study it too much. However, when covid came around, I felt it was my responsibility to start seeing what things I can do to protect my family including parents, grandparents, kids, etc. Vitamin D was one of the key things that came up pretty early on, and showed promise in helping to have less severe sickness for people that did get covid. So I got my family on a regular dose of vitamin D.

Recently, however, I saw an article talking about how much better it is to take vitamin D with vitamin K. See the article here:

The combination of vitamin D3 and K2 is more effective than just D alone. In addition, per the article, high doses of vitamin D without vitamin K to temper it, can cause high calcium levels (called hypercalcemia) in your blood, which leads to blood vessel calcification, which can lead to hear disease or stroke.

TLDR: Take vitamin D3 and K2 together in appropriate doses and you'll be healthier.

In regards to vitamin D's role in covid prevention as well, this article just came out:

Vitamin D3
Zinc
Vitamin C

Supplements:
Brickhouse Nutrition Foundation (Creatine + Real NTP)
Brickhouse Nutrition Field of Green (green drink)
1st Phorm Phormula 1 Hydrolized Protein (post-workout)
1st Phorm Igntion Glycogen Supplement (post-workout)

I do weight training for 1 hour every morning 6 days a week and I track my proteins, carbohydrates, and fats through the app. It's not hard and I am not a picky eater so I keep it simple.

I started at 225 and am down to 175 so far. I wanted to take myself out of the risk category for Covid and I was tired of being a fatty.

I've been doing a challenge through 1st Phorm as it keeps me accountable, which has helped a lot, and a friend of mine leads the group which is nice.

I follow this pretty much every day (I scale things down as needed) and I really enjoy it, but I eat so much damn food I'm still fat. Kind of a strong/agile fat guy. I'm good with it though

I have always really enjoyed working out. Did the p90x stuff years back. Did some bodybuilding stuff, but never really like that. I did some power lifting stuff (focus only on bench, squat, deadlifts).

If you look up Barbell medicine they have some really good programs. Ice cream fitness is a really good starter program for strength training. I don't mess with that any more though because bench messes with my shoulder and I don't like doing heavy deads any more.

But I started following the crossfit linchpin stuff a few years back and never looked back. Took quite a few years to get all the equipment together, but it has been so worth it

I use an app called MacroFactor for tracking macros + a built in "coach", meaning it will automatically adjust your macros based on how your weight is trending. It's the best one I've used by far. It's food database is massive so no worries there. I'm currently cutting to 170 lbs and it's been going well so far, slowly trending down but making noticeable progress which is what I want. It's like $70 for a 12 month subscription if you purchase the 12 months at once. They are also very active in pushing updates, doing Instagram lives (for those that use IG) to answer questions, etc.

There was an MSU guy that used to consistently post in the workout threads on TMB. Was that you?

Creatine is the only thing that has ever done anything at all for me as far as workout supplements. I really don't even mess with whey protein anymore
Creatine will definitely help to gain muscle and strength quickly, but in my past experience, I actually gained strength too fast and maybe coincidentally (I don't think so), I ended up having fairly significant injuries during that initial strength increase. That was 20 years ago though, so maybe some of the formulas / technology has improved

Nice work! What app do you use to track the food? Are you shooting for a specific number of calories or something per day to drop the weight? I'm about 225 right now, and am feeling pretty good overall, but would love to lose another 15-20 pounds.

Creatine has numerous benefits beyond strength and muscle, although some of them are harder to measure than others:

Which one do you take? I use to take a creatine monohydrate powder, and would take a spoonful and put it under my tongue until it pretty much dissolved or absorbed into the blood stream.

I bought this because I had a hard time finding creatine at all (supply chain) but it's been worth every penny. It's super fine so if you breath into it too hard it will blow out the container but it mixes perfectly. There is not gritty or graininess at all, something that cheaper options typically have.

It's so nice that I will look at other products from them. Yes they are expensive but so far it's worth it to me.

Thanks, brother! So right now I track my calories and workouts through the 1st Phorm app.

My target is:

Calories: 1928
Protein: 170 (but I can go up to 200)
Carbs: 163
Fats: 67

When I first started in January 2020 (1st pic) I started using Noom. I liked Noom because (unlike Keto) I could eat fruit when I wanted which was important to me and fit an eating lifestyle that was doable. I was keeping my total calories to around 1300-1400 calories per day. I was averaging 2-3 lbs a week while doing cardio (running, stairclimber) while on Noom. So, it accomplished my goal of losing fat pretty fast. However, I was running a calorie and protein deficit so I was losing muscle also.

1st Phorm has been better for me to add muscle and not fat. It has been a slower process but I am happier with the results.

I've got to go right now but I will see if I can find a picture after finishing with Noom to show you what I am talking about.

👀👀👀

I'm 178 lbs, cutting (losing ~1.2 lbs/week) and I 'm eating around 2100 cals/day.

I would be hangry 24/7 if I went down to that much.

Wow, that's really low calories (1300-1400). I did 1500-2000 calories per day for months a few years back, and that was also effective for me in dropping pounds. I probably just need to do that while lifting to keep as much muscle as possible. It's really just a discipline thing. I've gotten too undisciplined with snacking and over eating. It would be great to get to the point of having a routine that is sustainable long term that will allow flexibility in diet and exercise while still maintaining a strong and healthy body.

Been doing those face pills for a while now. Really does stabilize the shoulders and greatly reduces my osteoarthritis pain.
I need to get on the face pulls. My shoulders have been giving me some trouble the past year or so. They're mostly healed now to where I can start hitting the training harder again.

Doubt these work for many, but I got these air monarch cross trainers a couple weeks that have been really good for me. Took me a while to find something that didn’t make my feet hurt. Can’t wait to green em up cutting grass this summer

I refuse to buy Nike shoes. I think they're cheap in terms of quality but also don't want to support their politics. I've been trying to buy mostly Brooks shoes, which are great on the feet and for jogging, but definitely more expensive.

I've also gotten some Asics similar to these below. Both are pretty light and comfortable for working out.

Yeah I understand, I tried brooks and asics. Maybe I should have dug a little deeper, but I had a pair of Nikes from about 8 years ago that worked that whole time. I begrudgingly went back

Surprising to hear you like the Nike over those two based on feel. We all have different feet though, so gotta go with what works for you.

I recently switched protein to WheyCool by Designs for Health. It's well regarded as the healthiest protein out there. Expensive but worth it to me.

Design for Health’s Whey Cool Vanilla Protein Powder provides a great-tasting high protein, low carbohydrate functional food powder. It is made with an exceptional quality whey protein made from the milk of cows that graze on pesticide- and chemical-free, non GMO grass pastures in New Zealand, which is known to have one of the least polluted environments in the world. The milking cows are never fed grain, nor subjected to hormone or antibiotic treatments. This whey is instantized with sunflower lecithin (non-GMO), which helps it dissolve more easily in water and prevents foaming during blending.*

My feet are just fucked up in general. I was born with something called a tarsal coalition (extra bone in the foot). Had it removed from both feet in 3rd grade because I would not have been able to play sports (I basically had no lateral movement in the feet)

Then I ran a marathon (no shit) and I was still a pretty big boy. Further ruined my feet. And now I deal with planar faciatis constantly.

Those nikes have much better ankle support and are wider. Plus they are ugly as shit and reminds me of what my granddad wore when I was a kid

These are great shoes. I also like Saucony. It really pays to go to a quality shoe store and have them analyze your feet and how you walk. I’m flat footed and this helped me a great deal.
