There is more to this story. Autopsy by the medical examiners are not conducted routinely when the death is attended by a physician (which would happen in the covid ICU), they would have the cause and manner and sign the death cert. They do it every day. Cases are referred for autopsy/medical examiner for multiple reasons but primarily to the investigate and determine the cause/manner.
