Until his term Australia was attempting diplomacy and considering exclusive trade deals with China that included the potential for Chinese bases in Australian soil.

This isn’t some sort of new deal they just signed. It took years for The US military to review the Australian forces and install appropriate Intel assets and oversight to make sure the Aussies weren’t compromising our national security by gaining access to these strategies, products, tactics, resources, ect.
