• Pat Flood (@rebarcock) passed away 9/21/25. Pat played a huge role in encouraging the devolopmemt of this site and donated the very first dollar to get it started. Check the thread at the top of the board for the obituary and please feel free to pay your respects there. I am going to get all the content from that thread over to his family so they can see how many people really cared for Pat outside of what they ever knew. Pat loved to tell stories and always wanted everyone else to tell stories. I think a great way we can honor Pat is to tell a story in his thread (also pinned at the top of the board).

How to safely probe your own ports.

I typically probe my own ports 4 times a year. Sometimes more if I changed the computer with hardware or software.

You should do this to. Open ports on your computer can be connected to by a hacker. Once connected, they have access to your files and everything you do on the computer. Including a key logger that records the user name and password that you type to access banking sites..

I use GRC.com to probe my ports. Look for “Shields Up”. Once you click on it it, start reading. You will learn about security and you can probe your ports for weakness.

Additionally, GRC.com has a utility called Spinrite. @Croot_Overlord had a HD failure recently. Spinrite would have been something I would recommend to save a HD. I used it to restore a failed HD that was one of two in a RAID 0 configuration. Thats a scary, difficult, and complex situation for a nerd.
