I am supposed to renew my Texas driver's license in a little over a month. After about an hour navigating the horrible Texas website, I finally found the place to schedule an appointment. The earliest appointment is almost 2 months from now. This is what America has become, a third world bureaucratic shit-hole where it is almost impossible to get anything done.

Fortunately, here, they allow a certain amount of walk ins to get on a standby list for when people cancel, or they finish quicker than expected. It sucked because my son and I had to show up at like 5AM to get into the line for drivers test, but it beats waiting 2-3 months.

In first world Alabama I have renewed mine online for the last 2 cycles. That’s 8 years.

Took about 10 minutes and 35 bucks each time. They mailed the new license to me within a week.

Winning. Kinda like Hut Hut.

I had just the opposite experience. Walked in at 7AM sharp, nobody in the office but the angry woman on duty. She didn't even look up when I walked in as she was stuffing her mouth with a giant donut. and told me to grab a # off a display on the wall. I grabbed 23 instead of 1 just to see what she would do. I grab a newspaper and sit in the back row. 15 fkn minutes later she calls out #1. I keep the newspaper up where she can't see my face and she calls out #1 again. I still don't acknowledge her and she finally screams it again. I lower the newspaper and tell her I'm #23. Fk her and the govt agency she works for.

IIRC you get two renewals before having to go back in for a pic. Left Texas in 2015 so maybe it changed.

A driver's license in Texas is still valid for 2 years after it has expired insofar as not having to retake the driving test. I suspect having a written appointment time and expired DL in you possession while waiting to renew will avoid any problems if stopped. Try going to a smaller city away from the large cities. I did that and got in and out before my appointment time.

Social Security offices will not let anyone inside regardless of the issue. I suspect it will be this case for all government agencies from now on. They simply do not want to see anyone in person.

Interesting things about title companies. They want a valid, not expired, DL as picture ID in order to close a real estate transaction. At least that's what they say. But, when faced with making a fee or not, they have an affidavit that can be filled out to close the deal. I've seen it happen twice in my family. Relative was buying a house. Husband didn't want to renew his DL (expired the day before the closing) with the old address and have to get another with the new address. At closing, the title company said he'd have to go stand in line and renew before they would close. He told them that he would walk away and not buy the house if they insisted. Both realtors and title company went ape shit. The deal was closed.
