How do we know that?

LAWTEY, Fla. – A 3-year-old and an adult were killed and three other children were seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash Saturday in Bradford County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said the wreck happened around 10:45 a.m. in the area of U.S. 301 and Northwest 246 Street, north of Lawtey.

According to the Highway Patrol, a sport utility vehicle was heading south on U.S. 301 when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle went off the right side of the roadway and into a ditch. The SUV then went airborne, going through a small field onto Northwest 246th Street, and overturned, coming to a stop against a building along the street, troopers said.

The Highway Patrol said there were five people from Green Cove Springs in the SUV. The driver, a 40-year woman, and one of the passengers, a 3-year-old girl, died at the scene, troopers said.

The three other passengers — a 5-year-old girl, a 7-year-old girl and a 10-year-old girl — were hospitalized with serious injuries, according to FHP.

A news release from FHP shows none of the children were in child restraints or wearing seat belts. The news release does say the woman was wearing a seat belt.

The crash prompted lane blockages in the area.

This all happened down the street from a few homes.

A woman who lives in one of them spoke with News4JAX off-camera.

She said she didn’t see the crash happen but saw the aftermath. She described it as horrific and sad. She said she could not believe what she was seeing.

How in the world would none of the girls (most notably a 3 year old) not be wearing seat belts???

I won't move my car if my kids don't have their seat belts on. My nearly 60 lb six year old still rides in a booster seat. I just can't imagine having all my boys in the car and moving if they weren't buckled in. Seat belts and littering make me irrationally angry when it comes to my kids.

Poor Bucky, I don't know how that guy has the strength to go on. He has 3 girls that need him though, so he has to find it. All you can do is pray for him and donate what you can.

For those wondering what happened, he is too. An update::

As far as the accident. I won’t get in detail about it. The kids were all sleeping laying down in the back. Back seat was down and in a bed, all together. Rain hit hard and that’s when she hit a ditch. I’m still learning more about everything. It’s really fvcking hard. I’m here worrying about my three kids and anytime I think of the wife and my baby girl, I break down in tears.

I had one time where I was getting my two kids in the car and the older one got himself in his car seat (which up until this point I would put him in his carseat) and I closed the door having not buckled him in, was probably sleep deprived or something. We are backing out of the driveway and he says "dad you didn't buckle me" and my stomach sank so far I could not actually move for a minute or two.

I feel like a terrible parent typing this out because of what could have happened and thank God my son said something. Now I always always double check that both of them are buckled.

This is a bit more extreme but read a story a few years about a dad who dropped off one kid at daycare, thought he dropped the second one off (but didn't), drove to work and the kid passed away in the car. That's pretty extreme to forget a kid like that but I can also understand to an extent. Now I also double check when I drop them off that they are not back there because of that story.
