Synopsis
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a Game of Thrones prequel series based on George R.R. Martin’s "Dunk and Egg" novellas.
Forget ice zombies, airborne pyrolizards, and the political soap opera of the main series though. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is about the grime, the sweat, and the sheer audacity of trying to be a decent cunt in a brutal, unforgiving world .
Set during the Blackfyre Hangover 90 odd years before old Ned Stark lost his head, the dragonless Targaryens still firmly dominate the Iron Throne, and the realm is crawling with sadistic princes, bitter veterans from the Blackfyre Rebellion, and everyone is looking for an excuse to draw blood.
The story follows ser Dunk the Tall, a seven foot slab of muscle from the gutters of King’s Landing who’s "thick as a castle wall", and his squire, Egg, smart-mouthed, skin head kid, who secretly happens to be prince Aegon V Targaryen.
Their journey begins at a high-stakes jousting tournament at Ashford Meadow, where Dunk’s innate sense of justice inevitably leads to a confrontation with the royal family.
What follows is a series of grounded adventures, ranging from local disputes over water rights, to old school combat sports with nobles and sellswords bashing each other’s brains out over a matter of "honor" that quickly turns into a bloodbath, to uncovering treasonous rebellions, that test the true meaning of chivalry.
Instead of saving the world, Dunk is often just trying to get a decent meal, keep his horse alive, and avoid getting his hand chopped off by some high-born sociopath.
Just because it’s a "prequel" doesn't mean people don't die in sudden, ugly ways, as George R.R. Martin reminds us early and often that a knight’s life is mostly mud, bruises, and bad luck.
It’s basically a buddy-cop dynamic if the cops were a confused giant and a royal kid pretending to be a hobo, and the "city" was a lawless countryside full of melee combat enthusiasts looking for a fight.
GoT Timeline
•House of the Dragon (~101–131 AC): The peak of Targaryen excess. This is the era of massive fire-breathing monsters and a family civil war so brutal it effectively killed off the dragons.
•A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (~209 AC): Set roughly 78 years after the House of the Dragon civil war ends. The dragons have been dead for about 50 years, and the Targaryens are now just "normal" asshole royals who have to rely on steel and reputation rather than tactical nukes.
•Game of Thrones (298 AC): Starts roughly 89 years after Dunk and Egg first meet at Ashford Meadow.
If House of the Dragon is a high-budget war movie with jets, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a gritty Western set in the aftermath when everyone is broke, drunk, the high-tech weapons are gone, and everyone is still looking for a reason to kill each other.
Highly recommend.
