What Movie Really Holds Up?

Thanks to outdated comedy style, CGI, or crappy storytelling, some movies that were really popular when they were released are almost unwatchable now. But some stand the test of time. What movie do you think holds up the most?

The one that comes to mind for me at the moment is Jurassic Park. The story is good and tight. The use of so many practical effects (with some scattered CGI in there) really helped keep from having a really dated look in the long-run.

Unforgiven. The Departed. Gladiator. Casino Royale. Sky Fall. Inglorious Bastards. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The Godfather series.

I think the special effects in Jurassic Park are far better than new CGI movies. Because the CGI was more limited at that time, they used tricks (dark lighting) and minimized CGI unless they had to use it. These days, they rely on CGI 100% and it still looks bad. The new Jurassic World films are like this. The only scene in Jurassic Park that looks dated is the long scene showing the Brachiosaurus when they first see dinosaurs. Because it was a longer shot in a daylight setting, it looks dated now. The rest of the film is still phenomenal.

Agree 100% on cgi. I feel like special effects looked the most realistic in the 90s for this reason.

I’ve been forcing my sons to watch movies from my youth lately. Out of what we’ve watched lately Sneakers has held up surprisingly well and the Highlander is a gigantic piece of shit.

This is truly how to tell if something holds up, otherwise too much nostalgia gets involved.

The Big Lebowski is one I watched for the first time 5 or 6 years ago and love it.

Inglorius Bastards is one of my ALL TIME favorites. Have you seen "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood"? If not, roll 'em!

You're right. Forgot, but i did not forget his best role ever in my opinion and that "Unforgiven."

won’t argue that

I agree with you on Unforgiven. His no name westerns were also pretty good. I am not sure if you have seen them but Clint had a role as Rowdy Yates in the Western sitcom, "Rawhide." It wasn't the lead role but he was very good in it.

Hell yes! Rowdy Yates. Grew up on Rawhide. I will tell you a short story that is true. I lived in L.A. for roughly 10 years. I married a woman who's mother was best friends with Farrah Fawcets manager. She gave me and Kim two tickets to the world premier in Hollywood of Bronco Billy. Not one of Clint's blockbusters. Long story short there was a reception in the lobby and I look over and there is Clint Eastwood standing by himself next to a hallway.

Being me, I took my shot and walked over and introduced myself. He was great, just a regular dude. I told him I grew up to Rawhide and him playing Rowdy Yates. He laughed out loud and said "forget that would ya!" We talked for a good 5 minutes at minimum. Then a blonde bombshell named Julie Newmar walked up and said "Clint!" He looked and me and put his hand out to shake and said "It was nice talking to you." My 5 minutes of fame was over.

I agree with all this… but the fact that you said nothing about Kindergarten Cop both surprises and enrages me.
