Dad is an old man now, retired, and living in an assisted living apartment (pretty baller actually). But anyways, long story short, he was a very successful hs basketball coach in Alabama. He’s in the Alabama hs sports hall of fame, was in sports illustrated “faces in the crowd” twice, sent multiple players to college and a couple to the NBA. Anyways, he won 13 state championships. This is his ring collection, pretty sweet.

That’s awesome man. I’ve got my dad’s dog tags and his Syracuse class ring. My brother has his pilot wings from Vietnam and Delta.
My pops gave me his airborne wings when he drove them into my chest at my airborne graduation. No backing just drove the spikes right into my chest. Lol he looked me in the eyes and said he was proud of me and that was tradition. Wasn’t a fan of the delivery method at the moment but it means the world to me today. Airborne!

He was Dragon Brigade commander at Bragg and I hadn’t told him I was going and I had not listed any notable or VIP family members on my paperwork. The day before our last 2 jumps I get called into the commanders office and he wasn’t happy. They put me in full chem gear and had me run stairs damn nearly all night. The next day we’re loading up for our next to last jump and he shows up and doesn’t say a word but he’s geared up and getting in the plane. They put me in the door with him behind me....he put his boot so far up my ass to send me out the door I thought I’d been hit by a truck. Looking back today it was one of the best experiences ever.

That is very cool. If it was me, I'd have all those polished up real nice and put into a REALLY nice frame. Hang that shit on my wall for generations to come. Huge accomplishment and something the whole family should appreciate and be proud of.

When did you go to ABN school? My second to last job in the army was a black hat. I was an instructor there from 2017-2019. “Blood wings” had been banned by that time and the commander was VERY strict about it.

1989 was when I was there. Fucking loved that hoorah shit. We got a night jump and they put us out about 1.5 miles from the jump zone. Nothing like landing that far out and having to double time it back with gear to the LZ at night knowing full well that if your not back PDQ your getting recycled and it was probably intentional (tough love).

Banning bloods wings for a father son is ridiculous IMHO. I doubt anyone would say anything, I know I wouldn’t. Great memory and great feeling knowing what it meant to him at the time.

My black hat was about 6’4 knuckle dragged and the meanest mfer I’ve ever come across. We needed troops like him then and we really need them now.

And this is an old picture taken from the 1940s, of when they still has the 4th tower. (Fell in a hurricane)
