The current law in Texas requires a person to have a CHL to carry a handgun openly or concealed. It also requires that the person carry the handgun in a shoulder or belt holster. It also requires a person to have a CHL in order to have state reciprocity.
On Sept. 1, there is no license required to open or conceal carry a handgun. On Sept 1, the provision for shoulder or belt holsters is expanded to include thigh, ankle, wrist or other holsters.
However, one still needs a CHL issued in Texas in order to carry in other states via reciprocity, unless that state also allows constitutional carry. It would be wise to check the laws of those states beforehand.
All other prohibitions in the current law remain after Sept. 1 with regard to places one can carry or are prohibited from carrying.
So many people got in a twit about this law and predicted it would become the wild west if enacted. All it did was remove the need for a license and put law abiding citizens on equal footing with criminals and those currently ignoring the law. What the do-gooders failed to grasp and/or intentionally ignored was Texas law already allows licensed or unlicensed people much latitude on when and where they could carry handguns.
