I was surprised to learn this. Until the 1980 election, the red and blue color party associations were reversed.

In fairness, West Virginia is a really weird shape. Probably has something to do with inbreeding, but, regardless, it would be very difficult to draw.

Any state with panhandles is awesome looking. Way better than Colorado.

I point this out all the time. Red just like elections maps in Europe are associated with the left as it should be. The media in the 80s wanted to hide this and took the orders from the DNC to swap the colors. I think 1984 it was mixed but by 1988 the conversion was complete.

Agreed. All those middle American states that are just glorified squares/rectangles are trash. As a proud New Jersian (first time that’s been written) I am all about amoeba type shapes
