He was not elected, he and his party didn't receive a majority of votes. He was appointed into a position of power.
He and his followers used a chaotic event at the country's Parliament building and blamed it on a "revolution."
They quickly blamed their political opposition for the "revolution", even though historically there are doubts about who actually created the event, or if he and his followers simply took advantage of the event for their purposes of taking control and consolidating power.
They restricted freedom of assembly, freedom of speech, suppressed publications with opposing views, suspended individual rights and due process of law, targeted, demonized, arrested, and jailed their opposition without specific charges, and consolidated power into one political party. They overwrote local and state laws and overthrew local and state government (eventually replacing everyone with their people, including on all courts). They used secret police to turn people in who opposed these actions. They also encouraged people to turn their neighbors in if they opposed the regime or were critical of the regime in any way. Martial Law was instituted.
Gun restrictions had been put in place years earlier due to fear of a violent revolution...
The event was the Reichstag's Fire on February 27th, 1933.
The first law passed was the "Reichstag Fire Decree" of February 28th, 1933.
The second law passed was the "Enabling Act" of March 23rd, 1933. (Also called the "Law to Remedy the Distress of the People and Reich")
The elderly President in his mid 80s signed everything put in front of him by the younger person in power.
KZ Dachau was opened on March 22nd, 1933 to jail the political opposition.
These conditions rapidly got tougher in 1934 when the elderly President passed away and the younger one made his role official. Martial Law remained in place for 12 years...
