Very unpopular to say, but damnit I will say it.

The F-35 is an overengineered piece if shit.

The air force would be better buying tons of F-16s with improved engines for the F-16.

The Navy never buys good planes, but they could buy something less crappy than the F-35.

Pretty sure this is becoming a very popular opinion. There is a reason the US has tried to pawn this off on all the international partners.

There is a law prohibiting exporting the F-22

It's funny the F-15EX they are buying more of now costs the same as a new F-35A. Biggest difference though is the maintenance costs are a lot less.

The Navy needs a stealth capable tip of the spear for contested air space. I agree with the F-16/F-15EX premise for homeland defense and Air National Guard units. But FOB's and Naval ships are in desperate need of stealth capable fighters. Since these will most likely be the first in combat.

The biggest advantage of the F-35 is not the stealth though it is the ISR and communication package it brings to the fight. They way they interlink to the battle space is pretty amazing. They even have them linking with ground and artilary units to relay target locations.

Currently the effective weapons range for any US fighter in Air to Air is about 120 miles with the AIM120 or AMRAAM but an AIM260 JATM is currently in testing at 260 mile range which will out pace the 190 mile range of the chinese PK-15.

The USA is woefully behind the Chinese in missal tech

Great response...

F15EX is a great weapons truck and most of the Development was paid for by middle eastern countries who bought them. That is what made them cheaper to purchase. The F15C longerons are failing at an alarming rate and the EX is a great replacement.

Lot of blame to go around on MX for the F35....engines forced by congress now congress wants something different than what they forced LM into buying. They gambled on a singular cheap solution and lost.

F35 as a sensor is incredible.

We are behind the Chinese in weapons because their government dictates and owns the Chinese defense industry. They steal all and I mean all of the US development so they can do it for cheap and fast. Defense industry in the states and Europe answer to investors.

A lot of it also had to do with a shift in priorities with no real air to air competition. R&D went to air to ground and UAV tech. Chinese know they are no match for us in Air combat so they invested heavily into missal tech. It is why they are field testing hypersonics now.

The B-21 raider should be unveiled within the next 2 years and the NGAD is already in the test flight stages. Should be interesting to see what that will look like.

Our adversaries also invested in SAMs and the ability to deny our weapons even after launch. We gave them the desert proving grounds for 25 years to figure it out.

US still isn't building aircraft around weapons like the Chinese are. US is building 6 get platforms for 3 gen weapons. Weapons are a congressional bill payer when they want new airplanes in their district.

Weapons manufacturing has been fast tracked, ask @Croot_Overlord about the boom Hunstville is seeing now because of it. I do not expect it to be long before the weapons tech is flipped around. USA has been focused on weapons delivery instead of the weapons' themselves.

Lots of work on drone swarms and loyal wingman. Some pretty cool UAV coming out like the Mojave from GA.
