I looked up some articles about her completely quitting on her team and to no surprise, athletes everywhere are defending her decision. She is free to do what she wants, but she is also open for criticism for it. I am sure she will have no problem getting all the sympathy opportunities she is going to get going forward because all the woke athletes and celebrities that can't tell the difference between a quitter and an inspiration.

Could you imagine if any high profile white male athlete had done the same, in the middle of a competition?

I have to give her a little credit. It would have been easy for her to leave the floor and hide. She came back out to root on her teammates. Still, I would think her coaches and handlers knew she wasn't right back to the trials back in St Louis and all this could have been avoided. Just an awful look for her.

Bet her Gold over America tour that starts shortly after her return is in jeopardy.

That is so much work to get to that stage, to throw it all away now.

Not to mention that she had been there and done that before. She knew what to expect, but just collapsed mentally. Its an absolute refection of our country at this time.

I watched that PC she did and it was really weird/awkward. People are coming down on her pretty hard and it seems pretty apparent she has some pretty vicious demons in her head working against her. You don't go from being Michael Jordan/Tiger Woods of your sport to quitting midway through the NBA finals/Masters. Something really bad has to happen to trigger this and maybe she's breaking down like a lot of people are due to covid and the insanity the world has adopted. She's been such an amazing champion and has brought so much winning to Team USA that I have a hard time having a negative view of someone who has accomplished something generational and extremely rare. I think the reactions at this point have been split male/female for the most part and weirdly enough one of Team USA's coaches is a part of my extended family. I'm going to ask them what's up when I get a chance but I would love to hear a female's perspective on this so @tgsio get in here, warm that take up on high and tell us how you see it.

I’m surprised she even went with the previous scoring controversies.

Everyone has demons. We all do. Why let them out on the worlds largest stage? Seems unnecessary and selfish at first glance. Did she prevent someone else from getting a spot on the team? I know she was replaced, but someone could have taken the replacements spot.

Quitters at that level are pretty pathetic. You make it to that level because you are not a quitter.

A couple questions for this coach of hers you know;

Would she have quit on her team if they were about to win a gold medal?

In light of her mental health issues, why did she choose in the middle of a team event in the Olympics to address this issue? Would it have been better to allow someone else who is ready to compete, to take her place?

What about her sponsors??

She’s made millions and basically left them at the alter. Olympic athletes have no greater stage or marketability than they do right now.
I‘d be looking for a refund if I were them.

They'll make it up from her Ellen, View and Colbert type shows. She will be bullet proof

It took until the last day of the team event for her to realize she had a problem? LOL, that will undoubtable escape those that are coming to her defense.
Fine, don't win. Just don't play.

You want my honest take?

She had a bad couple of days. For her, a really bad couple of days. For the first time in ever, she wasn't in first place. She's never been in that position and with the expectation (from us, the international community, from herself) it was too much. Add to that she had already been handicapped by being stifled in what skills she could perform to the benefit of the other gymnasts, she's older and more aware of potential injury, the whole abusive element of the sport. (don't kid yourselves. It's brutal. I'm still pissed Bela was EVER allowed to set up a gym, never mind coach our Olympians after he and his hag of a wife were run out of Russia... for abuse. Don't get me started on Nassar, et al)

I have very mixed thoughts. This was not an easy decision for Simone.
On one hand, she's absolutely the best. She's the gymnast all strive to be. She has devoted everything to her sport. Everything* She is absolutely a very good person who has done her absolute best to be the best in all aspects of life.

On the other hand, this is something that has been brewing for a while and she should have been strong enough to step back before taking the spot from another gymnast. But, I also understand why she might have been afraid to do so before it all came crashing down.

My only issue is timing.

She's always been a winner. She's never had to learn how to lose. Unfortunately, she truly lost in the worst way and worst example possible to all. She quit.

There's no shame in losing. There's no shame in stepoing back. Just don't quit once you have engaged.

*Any of y'all notice that none of (okay, we have one this year) our female gymnast Olympians are NCAA athletes? They can't. If they want to compete at this level, no college. Most don't even attend high school. They have private tutors/ online school and no social life outside of their teammates/gym. I have a friend whose daughter is legit D1 good. She is in the gym minimum 8 hours a day/6 days a week. Has been since she was 12 years old. Family vacation? Nope. She can get one day off, then back in the gym. She missed 4 days a couple of weeks ago for bronchitis. Her coaches were less than pleased and made it very well known. My daughter was a D1 diver until her body said no more. She's friends/ competitors with Olympians. She was that good (though obviously not Olympian good.) The sacrifices she made for her sport are nothing compared to what is required of gymnasts competing at the comparable level. And my daughter gave up a great deal. She loved it (still coaches) and loves it still. She wouldn't go back and change a thing. But it's a lot. And parents need to be advocates for their child to know when to say it's okay to take a break or move on, no matter how talented they are. (my other daughter was a diver and naturally better than her sister. She decided it wasn't what she wanted to do at 14, with my blessing and full support.)

And now my son will play lacrosse in college. It's what HE wants. I'm just here to help him on HIS journey. Not my life. It's his. If he tells me tomorrow he's done? He'll take a break, we'll talk to make sure he's sure. If he is? He's done. No argument.

You wanted my take. There it is. Long-winded as usual.

I'm disappointed in her and for her. This will be something she will need help dealing with. This will be something that will be with her for the rest of her life. I wish her the best and I really hope she's strong enough to shut out everything except getting healthy. Not for anybody else but herself.
