It's true that right now, more often than not AI is retarded. But here's the thing: it's not always going to be like this.
I was really impressed by Stable DIffusion and the art it was able to generate for me. I still enjoy seeing other AI artwork. It's really good at making art.
Tom Scott got a feeling of dread asking ChatGPT about a issue with his email because he wanted to write a program to fix it. ChatGPT just outright wrote the program he wanted. The first attempt was flawed, but he then told ChatGPT it was flawed and why, and then ChatGPT corrected it.
That's a big deal. And if it continues to improve - it's going to have a huge impact on society.
A lot of people actually are going to lose their jobs. Human workers, even really talented ones who work in art, music, entertainment, programming, what have you, are going to be replaced by AI because the AI will generate equivalent work in much less time for much less money. A lot of businesses will employ one or two human employees and an AI to do work projects instead of employing a team of 20, 30, or even 100 human workers to do the programming, art, and music to make a game for example.
Once this becomes feasible it's going to be adopted quickly and our world will change almost overnight.
Tom is right we are already on the curve we just don't know when it's going to start going vertical.
