For everything I believe, I try to ask, "What evidence would make me change my mind?" And, in theory at least, I look for DIS-confirming evidence for my (factual) beliefs.
For all statements about abstrctions using the 'to be' verb, I try to rephrase the statement without it. For example, "Is Trump a true conservative2 should be re-phrased to something like "To what extent does the word 'conservative', as it has been traditionally used, apply to Trump?"
I'm a not-stupid, and I read a lot. I was a hard-core Marxist for the first 20 years of my adult life, and have been a self-described 'conservative' for the last 30. I'm still a historical materialist.
I'm an old, white, heterosexual, Southern male, who was active in the Civil Rights movement in the 60's. (Doing Voter Registration in Fayette County during Freedom Summer, for example.) I have a BA in History, an 11B10 in War, and an MSc and PhD in Computer Science.
Although I believe the Left are destroying America, I don't think there are any outright consciously evil people there. In fact, I'm looking for converts. And I am all too aware of the failings of many of us on the Right. Humans are imperfect. We're slowly clawing our way up from the mud, but it's three steps forward and two steps back. I think the main danger to our species right now is a big stupid war. If we can avoid that, we have a bright future.
